Queen Liliʻuokalani Canoe Race
Hosted by Kai ʻŌpua Canoe Club. Five days of racing over Labor Day weekend and the world's largest long distance outrigger race, drawing over 2,500 paddlers from Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Tahiti, the UK, Canada, the mainland, and across Hawaii.
It honors Queen Liliʻuokalani, Hawaii's last reigning monarch. The first race ran September 2, 1972, her birthday, and started as training for the Molokaʻi Hoe. It outgrew that a long time ago.
Saturday is the headline. Long distance, starting from the pier in Historic Kailua Village. Sunday brings double hull, OC1, OC2, and SUP. Monday closes with the Kupuna Classic for paddlers 50 and older.
